There is abundant evidence of the therapeutic efficacy of dewaxed Naftalan oil and its preparations in the treatment of various diseases.
Most studies focus on the effects of dewaxed Naftalan on patients with rheumatic joint diseases. It has been shown that general baths with dewaxed Naftalan oil reduce inflammatory phenomena in the joints of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with minimal disease activity. The effectiveness of Naftalan topical applications combined with UV irradiation has also been demonstrated in the rehabilitation of RA patients with minimal to moderate activity.
Long-term controlled clinical studies indicate that a course of dewaxed Naftalan applied locally to affected joints in patients with psoriatic arthritis and minimal to moderate inflammation reduces joint syndrome activity. Dewaxed Naftalan also shows efficacy in treating cutaneous psoriasis.
Topical applications of dewaxed Naftalan have proven effective for preventing spinal deformities and correcting existing changes in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (Bechterew’s disease). After Naftalan therapy, reflex tension of involved muscles and the intensity of inflammatory changes in enthesopathies were reduced, leading to increased range of motion in the spine and peripheral joints.
Differentiated application of dewaxed Naftalan in seated, two- or four-chamber baths is recommended for peripheral vascular diseases: obliterating atherosclerosis, endarteritis, post-thrombo-phlebitic syndrome, and diabetic angiopathies of the lower extremities, due to its hypocoagulant, vasodilatory, and anti-inflammatory effects. Treatment protocols are adjusted according to disease type, stage, degree of limb circulatory impairment, and individual patient characteristics. Cardiac function, blood pressure, and cerebral circulation should also be monitored. Dewaxed Naftalan therapy can be used in early stages of obliterating diseases, before and after surgery, in combination with medication, therapeutic exercise, measured walking, and massage.
Naftalan therapy with dewaxed Naftalan is successfully used in inflammatory diseases of the female reproductive system, in chronic and subacute stages. The best results are achieved in chronic nonspecific salpingo-oophoritis, primary and secondary infertility. Dewaxed Naftalan is applied via tampons, vaginal lubrication, or Naftalan swabs. It is sterilized in a water bath and cooled to 50–55 °C; tampons may be combined with lubrication of the perineal area if necessary.
Local applications of dewaxed Naftalan and its preparations (naphthenic hydrocarbons) to affected spinal segments and areas of referred pain, both as monotherapy and in combination with ultrasound therapy or infrared UV irradiation, have demonstrated high clinical efficacy in patients with cervical and lumbar osteochondrosis with or without radicular symptoms, as well as lumbar-sacral radiculitis in subacute stages, partial remission, and remission. Dewaxed Naftalan significantly reduces pain intensity, tension symptoms, restores impaired reflex-motor functions, and improves peripheral blood flow and neuro-muscular parameters.
Historical reports of Naftalan’s effectiveness in treating vitiligo, eczema, psoriasis, pruritus, burns, and other skin lesions date back over 100 years. According to dermatologists, topical application of dewaxed Naftalan reduces pain and tightness, softens the skin, accelerates resolution of pathological processes, and has low irritant and toxic effects. The most effective method for chronic dermatoses combines Naftalan therapy (baths or topical applications) with UV irradiation or heliotherapy. Naftalan therapy should be avoided in progressive disease stages.
Naftalan therapy is highly effective in patients with chronic nonspecific prostatitis. Various comprehensive treatment methods have been developed, mainly using dewaxed Naftalan, including Naftalan-paraffin mastic applications to the perineal area, rectal instillations of sterilized dewaxed Naftalan, general white Naftalan baths, and ultrasound phonophoresis with dewaxed Naftalan. Comprehensive therapy exerts anti-inflammatory effects on the prostate, regulates spermogram parameters, and normalizes secretory function.
Application of naphthenic hydrocarbons to the gums, combined with phonophoresis of the same preparation, provides analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects by improving microcirculation and immunomodulatory responses in patients with chronic and acute periodontal diseases. Gum color and shape are restored, and bleeding stops.
In chronic and acute inflammatory diseases of the paranasal sinuses (sinusitis, ethmoiditis, frontal sinusitis), instillation of dewaxed Naftalan or naphthenic hydrocarbons into the maxillary sinuses, combined with insertion of Naftalan-soaked tampons into the ethmoid labyrinth and ultrasound phonophoresis, restores nasal breathing and relieves discharge and headaches.
