Naftalan is a thick liquid of black-brown or brown color, which in appearance differs little from industrial types of oil. A distinctive feature of naftalan is its high specific gravity (from 0.927 to 0.970), which is обусловлено, firstly, by the insignificant content of light fractions (the level of which in other oils reaches up to 50%), the absence of low-boiling and solid hydrocarbons of the paraffin series, and secondly, by the significant content of naphthenic and aromatic hydrocarbons and resins.
Composition of native naftalan oil:
- naphthenic hydrocarbons (from 50 to 60%)
- aromatic hydrocarbons (up to 15%)
- resins (up to 25-30%)
- naphthenic acids (up to 1%)
- nitrogenous bases (up to 0.3%)
- water (up to 10-15%)
The active principle of naftalan is naphthenic hydrocarbons. These hydrocarbons with a short side chain form the basis of many biologically active substances – sterols, bile acids, vitamin D, progesterone. They participate in the biosynthesis of steroid hormones of the adrenal cortex, contributing to the stimulation of adaptive-compensatory functions of the body. In addition, naftalan oil contains a large number of physiologically active microelements – zinc, boron, manganese, iodine, copper, lithium, rubidium, cobalt, molybdenum, etc., which is of undoubted importance in the mechanism of its therapeutic action. Nitrogenous bases of naftalan, as well as naphthenic acids, are also not devoid of biological activity.
